Why You Are Always Tired — Ojas Depletion and the Rasayana Protocol

21 April 2026·6 min readGeneral Wellness

Normal tiredness resolves with sleep. Chronic fatigue does not. In Ayurveda, this is Ojas depletion — and it requires a specific protocol to reverse.

The tiredness that sleep does not fix

Normal tiredness has a cause and a cure. You work hard, you exercise, you have a long day — you feel tired. You sleep. You wake refreshed. The system works.

Chronic fatigue is different. You sleep eight hours and wake exhausted. You rest on the weekend and feel no better on Monday. Coffee gets you through the morning, then the crash hits harder than before. There is a persistent, baseline heaviness that no amount of rest resolves.

If your doctor has ruled out thyroid disorders, anaemia, diabetes, and other clinical causes, and you are still tired — Ayurveda has a specific explanation for what is happening and a specific protocol to address it.

The difference between tiredness and Ojas depletion

In Ayurveda, Ojas is the final refined product of the metabolic process. When food is digested and metabolised, it passes through seven layers of tissue transformation (the Sapta Dhatu). Ojas is the essence that remains after all seven transformations are complete.

Ojas governs three critical functions: immunity, mental clarity, and physical vitality. When Ojas is abundant, you feel resilient, clear-headed, and energised. When Ojas is depleted, you feel the opposite — vulnerable to illness, foggy in thinking, and persistently tired.

The critical insight is that Ojas is not replenished by rest alone. Rest provides the body with an opportunity to repair, but it does not provide the raw material for repair. Ojas is built from correctly digested, correctly metabolised nutrition — a process that requires functioning Agni and clear dhatu channels.

This is why sleeping more does not fix chronic fatigue. The body is resting but not rebuilding. The tissue-level depletion continues regardless of sleep quantity.

What causes Ojas depletion

Ojas depletion occurs through several pathways, often in combination:

Chronic stress. The HPA axis stress response consumes Ojas at a rate faster than the body can replenish it. This is why prolonged periods of stress often culminate in a crash — the Ojas reserves are exhausted.

Overwork without adequate recovery. Physical or mental overwork drains Ojas. If the recovery period is insufficient — as it typically is in modern professional life — the balance tips toward depletion.

Poor sleep quality. Ojas is primarily replenished during deep sleep. If sleep is fragmented, light, or pharmacologically induced (which does not produce the same depth of sleep), Ojas replenishment is inadequate even if sleep duration is sufficient.

Impaired Agni. If the digestive and metabolic fire is weak, food is not fully processed through all seven dhatu transformations. Less Ojas is produced from each meal. This creates a compounding deficit.

Prolonged illness. Illness consumes Ojas as the body mounts its immune response. This is why people feel depleted for weeks or months after significant illness — the Ojas has been consumed and not yet rebuilt.

The progressive nature of Ojas depletion

Ojas depletion is not static. It progresses if not addressed. The trajectory is characteristic and identifiable:

Early depletion presents as persistent tiredness, slightly more frequent illness (catching every cold that goes around), difficulty concentrating, and a sense of reduced resilience. Most people normalise this stage as getting older or being busy.

Moderate depletion presents as fatigue that affects daily function, significant reduction in immune competence (recurring infections, slow healing), emotional fragility (reduced stress tolerance, mood instability), and early signs of the body systems beginning to underperform.

Advanced depletion presents as chronic fatigue syndrome-like symptoms, autoimmune tendencies, chronic inflammation, significant cognitive impairment, and the kind of systemic unwellness that is difficult to attribute to any single cause. Blood tests may be normal. The person feels profoundly unwell.

The patients who respond most quickly and completely to Rasayana therapy are those in the early and moderate stages. Advanced depletion responds too, but the treatment is longer and the rebuilding more gradual.

The Rasayana protocol

Rasayana is the branch of Ayurveda specifically dedicated to rebuilding Ojas and restoring vitality. It is not a supplement regimen. It is a structured clinical protocol.

At Era Ayurveda in Gurgaon, the Rasayana protocol for fatigue follows a specific sequence:

Phase 1 — Shodana (purification). If Ama accumulation is significant — and in most fatigue cases it is, because impaired Agni is both a cause and consequence of Ojas depletion — a gentle purification phase clears accumulated metabolic waste from the dhatu channels. This must happen before Rasayana administration, because blocked channels prevent the Rasayana formulations from reaching the tissues they are intended to rebuild.

Phase 2 — Rasayana administration. Classical formulations prescribed to the patient's specific dosha type. The three primary Rasayanas for fatigue are:

  • ✓Ashwagandha — the primary Rasayana for Vata-type fatigue (anxiety-driven, nervous system-mediated exhaustion). An adaptogen that modulates the HPA axis and rebuilds nervous system resilience.
  • ✓Shatavari — the primary Rasayana for Pitta-type fatigue (burnout, inflammation-driven exhaustion). Rebuilds the cooling, nourishing quality that Pitta excess depletes.
  • ✓Amalaki — a universal Rasayana appropriate for all dosha types. The single richest natural source of vitamin C, but its Rasayana properties extend far beyond vitamin content. Amalaki rebuilds Ojas across all seven dhatus.

These are prescribed in therapeutic doses — significantly higher than the doses found in over-the-counter supplements — in classical preparations (lehyam, ghritam, or churna forms) that are specifically designed for Rasayana delivery.

Phase 3 — Agni restoration. Since impaired Agni both causes and perpetuates Ojas depletion, restoring correct digestive function is essential for sustained recovery. Without functioning Agni, even excellent Rasayana formulations cannot be properly metabolised.

Phase 4 — Dietary protocol. The dhatus are rebuilt from the building material provided by food. Our doctors prescribe a specific Ojas-building diet — not a restriction diet, but an intentional one. Warm, freshly prepared, mildly spiced foods. Specific Ojas-building foods (dates, almonds, ghee, warm milk). Meal timing that aligns with the body's natural Agni rhythm.

What changes and when

At Era Ayurveda, the typical trajectory for fatigue patients:

Weeks 2 to 3 — improved morning energy. Less reliance on coffee. The mid-afternoon crash becomes less severe. These are early signs of Agni restoration and initial Ojas rebuilding.

Weeks 4 to 6 — improved mental clarity. Better sleep depth. Reduced frequency of minor illness. Emotional resilience begins to return. Patients often describe this as feeling like themselves again.

Months 2 to 3 — sustained vitality. The baseline energy level has shifted. The fatigue is no longer the dominant experience of daily life. Immune function is measurably improved. The rebuilding continues through maintenance Rasayana.
